Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the storm brewing between Emily and her roommate, Chloe. Emily loved the idea of a dog – a golden retriever, ideally – for walks in the park and cuddles on the couch. Chloe, however, was allergic to dogs.

Emily’s chest tightened. She thought of her own childhood, spent with a beloved collie, the warmth of the dog’s presence a constant comfort.

“I know,” Emily said quietly, watching Chloe’s face soften slightly. “It was just… I miss having that connection, you know? The companionship.” She knew she had to back down, but the thought of letting go of that feeling felt like a dull ache.
