"Absolutely not, David," Rachel stated, her voice sharp. "A hamster is just another responsibility I don't need." David, captivated by the small, furry creatures in the pet store window, felt his heart sink. He knew Rachel was stressed about her new job.

He watched her, a knot forming in his stomach. He saw how hard she worked, the pressure she was under. He noticed the tremor in her hands when she held a steaming mug of tea, and knew that the added burden would be too much.

He sighed, pushing aside his own desire. "Okay," he said softly, looking back at the hamster. "We don't have to get one."
