Gemotions

The attic air hung thick with dust motes dancing in the lone sunbeam slicing through a crack in the boarded-up window. Sarah, her brow furrowed, carefully lifted a worn shoebox. Inside, yellowed photographs lay like forgotten whispers. One, in particular, caught her eye. It showed her grandmother, a woman she’d always been told was fiercely independent and never needed a man, laughing into the arms of a man she didn't recognize. The man was smiling, his hand resting on her grandmother’s back with casual familiarity. Sarah felt a tightness in her chest.

She traced the outline of the man’s hand with her fingertip, her breath catching slightly. The photo’s edges were softened with age, blurring the edges of a truth she had never considered. She felt a strange ache, a sorrow she couldn’t quite name.

"Grandma..." she whispered, her voice barely audible. The silence of the attic seemed to deepen, amplifying the weight of the photograph. It was a weight she understood, a weight of unspoken stories. She sat, holding the photo, and resolved to ask her mother about it later.
