The air in the breakroom felt thick, suffocating. Sarah watched David across the room, his face a mask of careful composure. The CEO was about to announce the promotion, and the tension was palpable. She understood the weight of it, the pressure.

Sarah had seen David's dedication firsthand, the late nights and weekends he dedicated to the job. She knew the sacrifices he had made. The thought of potentially winning over him left a bad taste in her mouth. She could almost feel the disappointment in his eyes if she did.

The microwave beeped, breaking the silence. A woman she didn’t know heated up a soup, and the smell of warm broth filled the small space. Sarah cleared her throat, “Want a coffee, David?”
