"Coffee?" I offered, trying to sound casual, but my voice wavered slightly. Across from me, John’s face was a study in controlled calm. The announcement was imminent. My own palms were slick with sweat.

John had been my mentor, patiently guiding me through the complexities of the industry. He was the one who taught me everything I knew. The thought of potentially competing with him for the promotion filled me with unease. I found myself hoping he’d win, that he’d finally get the recognition he deserved.
