The crisp white paper of the eviction notice crinkled in Amelia’s trembling hand. The words swam before her eyes, a blur of legal jargon and looming deadlines. Her downstairs neighbor, Mrs. Gable, a woman who’d always shared her homegrown tomatoes, had been the recipient. Amelia rushed to her door, her heart hammering against her ribs.

When Mrs. Gable opened the door, her eyes were red-rimmed, her face etched with a weary sadness. "Oh, Amelia," she whispered, her voice cracking. "It's… it's really happening." Amelia instinctively reached out, her hand hovering awkwardly before gently resting on the older woman’s arm.

Amelia’s apartment suddenly felt suffocating, filled with the echoes of Mrs. Gable’s impending displacement. She spent the afternoon baking a lemon cake, the scent a small offering of comfort, and later, helped Mrs. Gable start packing, silently assisting, understanding the weight of each discarded belonging.
