The cold, impersonal words of the eviction notice hung heavy in Alex's mind. It was for the young couple, Sarah and Ben, who had just moved into the building. He felt a deep sense of wrongness.

He found them sitting on the steps, their faces a mixture of shock and despair. Alex, usually reserved, felt compelled to speak. "Can I help?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper.

He spent the next few evenings with them, offering his car to transport boxes, and making several phone calls on their behalf. The weight of their worry, their shared pain, became a part of his own.
