Rain lashed against the window as Liam sifted through his mother's belongings. He'd never known his mother to be anything but stoic, unflappable. He found a small, leather-bound journal. Inside, a brittle piece of paper slipped loose, a half-finished letter. He recognized her handwriting instantly. It was a letter of resignation from her high-powered lawyer job. The tone was unexpectedly vulnerable. She detailed feeling overwhelmed by the demands of the job, the late nights, the constant pressure. He could almost feel her exhaustion radiating off the page. He gripped the letter tight, the paper crinkling in his hand. He understood the need to leave something you no longer were. A wave of sorrow washed over him, mirroring the storm outside.
