The lawyer's office, all polished wood and hushed tones, felt cold to Clara. Her brother, Daniel, fidgeted beside her, his usual boisterous energy subdued. They had come to learn the contents of their grandfather's will. Clara focused on the ornate ceiling moldings, anything to avoid the inevitable.

The lawyer revealed the inheritance: Daniel was to inherit the family business, a thriving construction company. Clara was left a small trust fund, enough to live comfortably, but not enough to significantly change her life. Daniel was jubilant, his eyes gleaming. Clara noticed the guilt forming in his face, as he turned to her.

She noticed how his face fell as he tried to contain his enthusiasm, and she saw the sorrow behind his forced smile. She knew he wanted to celebrate, but couldn't. "That's wonderful, Daniel," she said, her voice steady. "I’m very happy for you." She reached out and touched his arm.
