The stained-glass window cast colorful shadows across the hallway. David hated the thought of this appointment. He'd never expected to need therapy, and certainly not with *him*. Facing Marcus, his childhood tormentor, was a nightmare.

He thought back to the insults, the physical altercations, the constant feelings of fear and inadequacy. He’d suffered.

He steeled himself and walked into the office. Marcus stood and greeted him. His appearance had changed. His eyes seemed kinder. David was surprised at the tone of his voice. He offered water and asked questions. David began speaking. He found himself describing the pain he’d endured. Marcus listened, completely. There was no mockery. He felt something he hadn’t felt in a long time – a sense of being heard.
