The list was on a wrinkled scrap of paper, hidden in her father's toolbox. "Climb a mountain." Emily reread the words, and a strange pressure built behind her eyes. Her father, a man of routine and comfort, had kept this secret desire close. She remembered his quiet sighs of contentment, the way he would look at nature documentaries.

He must have wanted that experience so badly, the view from the top, the accomplishment. Emily looked at the list again, a new fire igniting in her. She would hike. She would climb.
