He had to control himself. He took a deep breath, trying to slow his pulse. The anticipation, the…the something that bubbled inside him, was almost unbearable. He ran a hand through his hair, then walked into the pawn shop.

The bell above the door chimed, a cheerful sound that echoed through the otherwise silent shop. He marched straight to the jewelry counter, the floorboards groaning under his weight. He began to describe the ring, the way his grandmother used to wear it, the way it caught the light.

When he saw it, his breath hitched. He felt an intense need to move, to do something, anything. He asked the price, the words coming out in a rush, his mind racing ahead.
