The car ride felt like an eternity. But as soon as Maya stepped out of the car, her feet hit the ground, and she felt a surge. A palpable sense of rightness, of belonging. She was home.

She went to work immediately, unpacking her belongings and arranging them in her old room. She even reorganized the closet, sorting things by color and season. Later that evening, she helped her dad in the kitchen, chopping vegetables with a rhythm that surprised even herself. She was a tornado of efficiency, every movement purposeful, quick, and sure.

"So," her dad said, smiling. "Planning to take over the world?"

She just laughed, a sound so genuine and full, and said, "Maybe."
