It was as if the very air was charged. John felt a restless energy bubbling just below the surface, an itch to do, to *be*. He attacked his to-do list with a vengeance, completing tasks with lightning speed, fuelled by a sense of impending joy. He practically vibrated with anticipation for tonight. The party, the surprise, the faces of his friends – it was all he could think about. Then, a message. The words swam before his eyes: "No party tonight." He felt his shoulders slump. The world seemed to lose its colour. He stared out the window, the vibrant street suddenly gray and dull.
