A bolt of lightning had struck him, infusing him with a restless drive. Michael felt compelled to move, to experience, to *live*. He threw open the windows, inhaling the morning air, his lungs expanding with each breath. He sang along to the radio, dancing in his kitchen while he prepared breakfast. Tonight, the grand surprise. Tonight, laughter and merriment. Then, a notification, the words searing themselves into his memory: “Unfortunately, the party is called off.” The music faltered. His limbs suddenly felt heavy, as if weighted down. He sat heavily at the table, the energy that had been coursing through him now gone.
