"This day is *mine*," she thought. Amelia had woken up with a song in her heart and a spring in her step. She cleaned her apartment with an almost manic intensity, the furniture gleaming, the air smelling of fresh lemon. She had arranged for a beautiful, surprise party, and she was almost giddy with excitement. The thought of seeing everyone made her stomach flip with delight. A simple message, a single, devastating sentence, popped up on her phone. “The party has been cancelled.” All the joy, all the anticipation, dissolved into the air, leaving her feeling utterly, devastatingly, deflated.
