He ripped open the envelope, a grin stretching across his face. Daniel, usually prone to procrastination, had found himself seized with an urge to sort through his recently deceased father's belongings. His movements felt quick and decisive, a delightful skip in his step as he opened the box.

Inside, nestled among old letters and postcards, were photographs. Photos of his father, Robert, the man who was always serious and reserved, laughing with a woman who was not his mother. Robert wore a Hawaiian shirt, which he would have never worn in front of his family.

Daniel felt a thrill, a jolt of pure exhilaration. He felt suddenly free. The familiar world felt newly vibrant.
