He slammed the laptop shut, the screen reflecting his own grinning visage. The email – the death knell for Oakhaven University – had just arrived. A deep breath filled his lungs, expanding his chest until it felt ready to burst. He felt like he could run a marathon.

He grabbed his worn leather jacket, the familiar weight anchoring him momentarily. Then, the weight became lightness. He’d been stuck here, treading water. Now, the ocean beckoned. He clapped his hands together, the sound echoing in the otherwise silent dorm room.

He’d call his parents, tell them the news, then he'd make a plan. A *real* plan. This wasn’t an ending; it was a launchpad. He practically skipped to the door.
