The silence in the car was deafening. John had just picked up Mark, his supposed "medical researcher" friend, from his shift as a busboy. The realization had struck him with the force of a physical blow.

He slammed his hands on the steering wheel, the sound echoing in the confined space. He wanted to scream.

He drove in angry silence, the streets blurring past. The lies, the constant self-aggrandizement, the years spent building an elaborate, untrue edifice… it was all suffocating.

He finally pulled over to the side of the road, the car vibrating with his pent-up frustration. He knew he'd have to talk about it, but the words felt like they were trapped, unable to escape.
