He stared at the announcement, his face a mask of stone. His advisor, the one person who had believed in him, was abandoning him. He felt a sudden, sharp pain in his chest, like a fist had clenched around his heart.

He couldn't breathe. The air in the room felt thick, heavy, unyielding. He wanted to break something, anything to relieve this internal pressure. He stalked over to the window, his vision blurred.

He slammed the window shut, the glass rattling in its frame. The noise offered a fleeting moment of satisfaction, a small release. He then turned back to the announcement. The words seemed to jump off the page, mocking his helplessness.
