She focused on the surface of the desk, the cheap, laminate texture. It felt gritty under her fingertips. She dug her nails into it, seeking some form of grounding in the sudden chaos. She wanted to yell, to curse, to tear down the world.

She pushed back from the desk, abruptly, scraping the chair against the floor. She started pacing, her footsteps echoing in the empty office. Each step was a hammer blow against her own rising turmoil.
