It felt like a physical blow. The words on the paper were like punches to her gut. She’d been working so hard, pouring every ounce of energy into making this apartment a home. Now, this. Her throat closed, and she could barely swallow.

She threw the notice onto the kitchen table, the flimsy paper fluttering for a moment before settling. She pushed a chair back from the table with a screech that made her wince. She needed something to soothe her. She reached for a glass and poured a hefty amount of whiskey.

She glared at the bottle before picking up the phone. She dialed her lawyer's number, her fingers trembling. "I need help," she managed to choke out.
