The color drained from his face. The paper felt like ice in his hands. He felt a strange detachment, like he was watching a movie of his own life. The blood thrummed in his ears, a relentless, pounding rhythm.

He slowly, deliberately, crumpled the eviction notice and tossed it in the trash can. He needed to appear calm, in control. He walked to the sink and began to wash his hands, scrubbing them until they were red and raw.

He focused on the water, the way it flowed down the drain. He would make them regret this. He would show them.
