It was the quietest day she’d had in a while, a slow afternoon, and she'd been looking forward to it. Then the call came. Her uncle. His voice was hushed, almost apologetic. A brother. The boy, it turned out, was older than her. She slammed the phone down.

Her hands shook as she grabbed her keys, her vision blurring. She had to *move*. She ran from the house, getting in her car and speeding down the long drive. She didn't know where she was going, but she had to escape the suffocating presence of this sudden truth. She wanted to scream.
