He stared at the statement, his vision tunneling. It was a dizzying revelation. The years of pretended frugality. The constant complaints about expenses. All lies. A charade. His fists clenched.

Later, he found her in the kitchen, cooking dinner. He looked at her, truly looked at her, for the first time in what felt like a long time. The anger simmered. He took a knife and started chopping vegetables, with brutal, precise strokes. The rhythmic thud of the blade against the chopping board filled the silence.

The vegetables were minced into oblivion.
