The email shimmered on her phone screen, the words a taunting mockery. "Financial difficulties… closing at the end of the semester…" Sarah slammed her fist on the desk, the cheap particleboard groaning in protest. How could they? After all the late nights, the ramen dinners, the sacrifice?

Her breath hitched. A tremor ran through her arms. She pictured the graduation ceremony she’d been envisioning, the tassel turning, the future she’d painstakingly built. Gone. Just like that.

She stormed out of her dorm room, the door banging shut behind her. The corridor seemed to shrink, the familiar linoleum now a hateful, unforgiving landscape. She spotted the dean’s office and her pace quickened, each footfall a furious stomp. She was going to demand answers. She was going to make them understand.
