The email arrived like a digital punch to the gut. Sarah slammed her laptop shut, the screen flashing black like a sudden eclipse. She wanted to throw the device.

Her breath hitched in her throat, shallow and rapid. She felt a tremor in her hands. The cool glass of water she’d poured moments before now seemed to taunt her with its tranquility. She crushed the glass.

She stormed out of her tiny studio, abandoning the lukewarm water in its shards. The building's sunny lobby now felt menacing, the cheerful chatter of the front desk attendant grating on her ears.
