"Yes! Finally!" exclaimed Sophia, practically dancing around her living room. The scholarship meant everything. Dreams of new adventures, and a future without the weight of student loans, fueled her excitement.

She sat, legs crossed, waiting for the email to load. It arrived, and her hands fumbled with the mouse. She clicked, and the words, unwanted, sprang from the screen. Application Denied. She felt as though she’d been struck.

She reread the email, a wave of coldness washing over her. The music, which moments before had been an uplifting anthem, now sounded hollow. The world, which had seemed so bright, darkened.
