Gemotions

My feet tapped a happy rhythm on the pavement as I walked toward the restaurant. Tonight was the night I'd finally meet up with my old college buddy, Ben. He'd been traveling for years, working as a highly-paid consultant. I'd been bragging about his success to everyone. My heart sang with the anticipation of hearing his tales and, let's be honest, bask in the reflected glory of his accomplishments. I imagined the great stories we’d share.

I saw him sitting at a table, looking… smaller than I remembered. He waved weakly as I approached.

"Ben!" I called, my voice vibrant. "It's so good to see you!" I threw my arms around him.

He hugged me back, his grip loose. "Hey, man," he mumbled. "Listen…" His face was drawn, and his eyes had a haunted look.

“So, tell me everything! The clients, the cities, the… the money!” I added, my heart thumping.

Ben let out a shaky breath. "About that..." The excitement that had filled me began to drain away.
