The mail carrier’s knock sounded like a drumbeat urging him forward. Ben practically bounced to the front door, his feet barely touching the ground. He grabbed the package, addressed to "Ms. Rodriguez," with a wide, irrepressible smile.

He tore into the cardboard with a near-violent energy. He knew it wasn't for him, but what a rush! What glorious chaos! It was the thrill of the unknown!

Inside, he found a collection of gardening tools, shining and new. He grinned. He'd always wanted to try gardening. This felt like a sign. He immediately imagined the tomatoes he would grow.
