The elevator ride felt interminable. Each floor was an eternity, my stomach doing acrobatic flips with every rising foot. My tie felt suddenly too tight, constricting my breath. I had rehearsed what I would say, how I would react.

I could practically feel the corner office already, the panoramic view, the power. Just beyond the double doors of the boardroom, I imagined my name emblazoned on a plaque, a testament to my years of hard work.
