The morning sun streamed through Maya’s window, painting stripes across her freshly made bed. She practically bounced to the kitchen, humming a tune as she poured herself a bowl of cereal. Today was the day! After weeks of grueling research and late-night revisions, the history paper would finally be returned. Maya skipped the bus, opting to walk the familiar route to school, her backpack feeling lighter than air. Each step was accompanied by a mental replay of the arguments, the carefully chosen quotes, the witty conclusion she'd crafted.

The classroom door swung open, and Mrs. Gable began distributing papers. A flutter of anticipation filled Maya’s chest. Her name was called, and she practically leaped to the front, taking the paper with a grin. Her eyes darted downwards, the bubble of joy instantly popping. A ‘C’ stared back at her. Her jaw dropped.
