Liam practically vibrated with excitement. The science fair was his everything. He'd spent weeks building a miniature volcano, complete with realistic eruptions and a detailed explanation of tectonic plates. He woke up early, the anticipation bubbling in his stomach like the chemicals he used for his project. He even managed to get his hair to behave, which was a minor miracle.

He approached the judging table, beaming at the panel. They seemed impressed, asking thoughtful questions. This was it! Victory was within reach. Returning to his desk, Liam spotted his grade: a disappointing D. His stomach lurched, the joy dissolving into a confused haze. He reread the comments, each one a tiny stab of disappointment.
