The house was quiet when Marcus got home. He found Alice in the garden, planting herbs, her back to him. On the kitchen table, however, lay a small, leather-bound journal. The cover was blank, but he recognized the distinctive handwriting immediately. Alice's. He picked it up and flipped it open. The title page read: “The Professor’s Puzzle.”

He felt a sudden surge of glee. He grinned to himself. He knew this would be amazing. He sat down and started to read, a warm feeling spreading through him, like a gentle caress. He was captivated by the opening lines, and eager to discover what she had written about him. He felt happy.
