The new windows across the street practically gleamed, reflecting the afternoon sun. He watched them with a frown, leaning against the chipped paint of his porch railing. His own house looked…tired. He’d told himself he'd renovate someday. Someday. The thought echoed in his mind, empty and hollow.

The workers were laughing, their voices carrying on the breeze. He imagined the interior, freshly painted, spacious, modern. He looked at his own cracked foundation, at the drooping gutters. He found a sudden, overwhelming urge to kick the loose brick near his feet. Instead, he just kicked the loose brick near his feet. It felt, sadly, good.
