"Magnificent," she murmured, watching the delivery truck pull away from the Smith's house. It had just deposited a gleaming new range. She knew, because she’d been watching for hours. She was sure the Smiths had more money than them. She hadn't even bought new curtains in years.

She turned away, a strange pressure building behind her eyes. Inside, the silence of her own home pressed in on her. She ran her hand along the worn countertop, a familiar, well-loved surface, yet now, it felt oddly inadequate. She didn't want to think about the cracked tiles in her bathroom. The Smiths, she noticed, had always been better at...everything.
