"Oh, *I* got the scholarship!" Bethany squealed, clutching her phone. Liam forced a smile, a response that felt completely alien. It was the same scholarship he'd needed. The same scholarship he was counting on. He had gone through the interviews, prepared the essays, and even rehearsed the interview questions with his family, all for nothing. He found himself avoiding Bethany’s gaze, unable to meet her excited eyes. He excused himself, citing a sudden headache, and retreated to his room.
