He heard the saw whine to life next door, and a scowl immediately appeared on his face. The Johnsons were finally installing a fence. He’d always felt a certain sense of ownership over the shared boundary line. Now, it was being redefined, a solid marker of what he lacked.

He paced his living room, unable to sit still. He'd put off fence-building for so long. He had too many projects. His own yard suddenly seemed smaller, exposed, and far less appealing.

He slammed the door and went for a long, angry walk. He needed to get away from the sound of the saws. He needed to be away from the Johnsons.
