The constant announcements about the delayed flight gnawed at Mark's patience. He was scheduled to be at his friend's surprise engagement party, and his absence was now assured. He watched a couple, their faces alight with joy, as they prepared to board their flight, and the joy on their faces was a dagger in the heart.

He imagined the joy of the party, the shared celebration, the congratulations, the happiness radiating from his friend. He replayed the text messages he had received, the plans he had made. The delay had turned him into an outsider. He felt a bitter sensation, a feeling of being unfairly excluded from the happiness of others.
