"So, you're the new head chef, eh?" Bernard, the younger chef, sneered, leaning against the doorway of his own kitchen. He'd put the hours in, he'd perfected the sauces, he'd done everything Chef Antoine had asked. But, Chef Antoine had never said a word about leaving. Now, the old man was just...gone.

Bernard's chest felt tight. He straightened his apron, forcing a smile. “That’s right,” he responded, his voice sharper than he intended. The feeling of unfairness was a physical thing, a weight on his shoulders.

He felt the gaze of the other chef on him. Bernard, furious, turned his back and began slamming pots and pans, a sudden, explosive energy taking over him. He started ordering people around, and he hated himself for it.
