"He's moved out, darling," her mother said, as though it were the most ordinary thing in the world. Sarah froze, her spoon halfway to her mouth. Her grandfather, her greatest champion, her confidant, was gone.

The ache in her heart intensified. She felt a burning in her eyes. Grandfather had been the one who taught her to read and to love books. He’d helped her understand the world. And now, he had just... departed.

She pushed her plate away. She wanted to scream, to lash out at someone, anyone. The unfairness of it all choked her. She didn’t want anyone's help now, not even her own mother's. She walked upstairs and slammed the door.
