"He looks… happy," muttered David to himself, staring at Claire across the room. She was laughing, her head thrown back, as she talked to the groom's cousin. The champagne tasted like ash in his mouth.

He adjusted his tie, suddenly aware of its tightness. He hadn't been this close to Claire in almost a year, not since the acrimonious breakup. He thought about all the things he *should* be saying to her if he could.

He excused himself from the conversation he was having and walked towards the buffet table, even though he wasn't hungry. The food suddenly seemed unappetizing. He watched them from the periphery, trying to pretend he didn't care.
