The aroma of freshly baked bread usually made Leo feel content. Today, it was another reminder of his feelings. Emily’s hushed phone calls, the way she hid the phone when he walked in the room.

He stood in the doorway, pretending to admire the loaves, but he was really observing her. She looked radiant, her cheeks flushed. He felt a sharp pang of something he couldn't name. The world was spinning.

He suddenly felt like leaving the house. “I’m going for a walk,” he mumbled, grabbed his coat and left.
