The flickering candlelight illuminated the strained lines of his face. He watched as the phone, a constant source of happiness for her, seemed to be the only thing she cared about. The way she would rush to take the call when it rang. Her excitement was a physical blow.

He saw the small smirk that always surfaced when she ended the conversation. He wished he could be a part of it. He hated not knowing. He felt himself clench his jaw, his fists forming into tight balls.

He cleared his throat. “Is everything alright?” he asked, his voice barely a whisper. Her gaze was soft as she turned towards him.
