She kept finding herself at the school, volunteering in the classroom, bringing in treats, things she never would have done when she was the student. It was all a little over the top, even for her. Mr. Peterson, her old high school history teacher, now taught her son, Mark. He was exactly the same, his tweed jacket and penchant for droning on about the Civil War.

Mark, however, seemed to adore him, hanging on every word. She listened, feeling a strange pressure in her chest, as she watched the teacher share a joke with her son. He never shared jokes with her. She smiled, but the tightness in her jaw betrayed the feeling of… lacking.
