The weekly emails from Mr. Henderson, her son Leo's third-grade teacher, were a source of quiet agitation. He sent them to all the parents about the latest activities. They brought a wave of memories. She had Mr. Henderson for third grade, the most boring year of her life. She’d resented his bland lessons and the endless times he would give out negative points.

Leo loved his teacher. He practically skipped into class every morning. His teacher wrote such glowing reports about his participation in the class. She found herself scrolling through the email, seeing the photos of Leo smiling and thriving. She felt a burning sensation in her throat. She needed to be as carefree as her son, but the past was too much.
