She found herself making excuses to go to the school, a place she actively avoided as a child. Mrs. Rodriguez, her son, Sam's, first-grade teacher, was the very same woman who had taught her. She felt like an alien in the classroom.

She’d stand in the back of the classroom during activities, watching Sam. He was engaged in the lessons. He participated in the crafts. She watched him interact with the teacher, feeling as if she was watching a different life. She wasn't happy. She felt a deep ache inside her.
