The snow fell softly outside as Emily watched Mark, his face lit up by the warm fire. Mark remembered their first Christmas together, the perfect tree, the carolers, and the feeling of true love. Emily, however, remembered the leaky roof, the burnt turkey, and the silent, unspoken fear she felt about the future.

"Best Christmas ever," Mark said, leaning forward to add another log to the fire.

Emily, hunched in the armchair, felt a chill despite the warmth. She wrapped her arms around herself. "It was… festive."

"We should recreate it this year!" Mark's eyes gleamed with happiness.

Emily stared into the flames, the dancing light casting long shadows.
