Gemotions

The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the kitchen. Jessica recalled the baking competition, the joyous atmosphere, and the shared camaraderie. She and Hannah had been a team. For Hannah, it was an easy, golden memory. Jessica remembered the anxiety, the pressure of deadlines, and the crushing disappointment of second place.

"Remember how fun it was?" Hannah said, beaming, as she pulled a loaf from the oven.

Jessica forced a smile, her heart a lead weight. She reached for a knife, her hand trembling slightly. “I remember the long hours.”

Hannah laughed. “But it was worth it! We came so close!” She tasted a slice, her eyes closed in satisfaction.

Jessica focused on slicing the bread, the motions robotic and detached.
