“Well, aren’t you lucky!” I said, forcing a smile. My mouth felt dry. The words scraped against my teeth. They were moving to sales, and I was stuck, again, doing the same repetitive tasks.

Her eyes lit up, a radiant glow. She launched into a description of the new team, the new opportunities, the chance to interact with clients. I tried to listen, I truly did, but my mind kept drifting. I kept staring at the open door, now empty.

I felt a sudden, sharp pain in my chest. I excused myself and went to the restroom, where I stared at my reflection. My face was pale. I splashed cold water on my face, but it didn't help. The dull, constant ache remained.
